THE DIRECTOR PREPARES THE ACTOR SHINES
|
George Herman
spends hours preparing the directors script even before
auditions. All scenes are blocked and rehearsals are scheduled to make the best possible use of the casts time and rehearsals last no more than 2 hours. He has directed over 200 plays for high schools, colleges and local and regional theatres. While in Hawaii, he was Artistic Director for the Commedia Repertory Theatre and directed for nearly every theatre company in the islands hastening the demise of one or two. George also designed sets and lighting for more than 40 university and summer theatre productions including the design and rigging system that flew four vomiting children in "Peter Pan". |
THE ACTOR
George first appeared on stage in the major singing role of Beppu in "The Magic Whistle" produced by his elementary school. (This was before his voice changed at age 56.) In high school he played Dr. Einstein in "Arsenic and Old Lace" and was secretly awarded a citation for the"worst continuing imitation of Peter Lorre." He appeared in a number of college and little theater productions in Baltimore, Maryland, because it was the best way "to avoid doing homework." In 1954, he toured the United States with the National Players Company performing Shakespeare and Moliere, seldom winning - even in overtime.
In Hawaii George appeared as a principal in 19 Hawaii Five-O TV shows - usually as a hit man or a mad doctor - which says something about the perception of professional directors
George also played a principal role in the film, "Sea Snake" which set records for avoiding both theaters, TV and DVD and going directly to anonymity. His brief performance in the Osmond movie, "Goin' Coconuts" ended up on the cutting room floor for which he thanks the divinities daily. He has performed over 200 stage roles ranging from Hadrian in "Hadrian VII" to Sir in "Roar of the Greasepaint" and Herbie in "Gypsy" where he played with no less than four Mama Roses - all of whom deny knowing or appearing with him. He made television commercials for CBS TV (national), Finance Factors, the Space Place, Kirin Beer, Frito-Lay, First Hawaiian Bank, Hawaiian Telephone, Love's Bread, and others, receiving about $50, a free storage locker for a year and 2 loans at interest of only 18% per annum.
