Nothing is what it seems in this musical adaptation of the Grimm fairy tale.  

Little Rumpelstiltskin who can spin straw into gold - among other accomplishments - is more a victim of senseless conformity than a tyrannical extortionist.  The rulers and towns people of the kingdon of Monotony, who dislike anyone or anything different, come to realize that intolerance is both stupid and demeaning. This musical play received one of the highest ratings in the 1987 Indianapolis Childrens' Theatre Playwrighting Competition.  The musical score includes the square dance "Straw into Gold" and the "rap" song "Diffrent".
