A young boy discovers by accident that he has a terminal disease that will kill him within the next few years. His reactions to this discovery strain relationships with his mother, his doctor, his classmates, and his best friend, with whom he shares a tree house (The Hidden Place). Encouraged by a man jogging along the shore, the boy examines why he was born to die so young, what he might expect after death, and becomes reconciled to his fate. In the process he also re-examines his attitude toward his father who was killed in Viet Nam when he was three, and he comes to understand about the "hidden place" beyond life.
