During the interminable wars between the city-states of Italy, a nefarious Duke is angered by the fact that his rival warlord travels with a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.  Determined to outdo his opponent, the Duke looks around for a likely candidate for sainthood and chooses a thief and liar, Vittorio.  In the process of making Vittorio into a saint, however, the Duke unleashes qualities neither man knew Vittorio possessed, and the "saint' not only achieves a certain level of sanctitiy, he also performs a few miracles along the way.
